The Illinois DOT specified a custom cast ductile iron post for the Wilson Street bridge outlook over the Fox river in Batavia, Illinois. OK Foundry cast 16 of these octagonal ductile iron posts to serve as structural supports for the outlook railing.
While gray iron is a common material for fence posts, balusters, and other architectural iron posts, ductile iron is preferred where load bearing capability and safety are important. Ductile iron has two to three times the tensile strength of gray iron and will bend before breaking. Ductile iron's ductility makes it much tougher than gray iron and able to resist significant impact loads where gray iron would crack and break.
